A Brevard County jury earlier in December ordered Disney Cruise Line to pay a ship worker $4 million based on her claim that after being hit by a car during a port of call, she received unsatisfactory care from ship doctors.
The car accident occurred back in 2013 while the ship was docked in the Bahamas. According to the victim’s complaint, the ship doctors claimed she was fit to work as a dining room server. A doctor in Florida later diagnosed her with three broken ribs, and she had to undergo five months of treatment. After returning to work in 2014, she had to leave just a month later due to nerve damage.
This is the first time Disney Cruise Line has lost a personal injury case involving a ship worker. According to The Miami Herald, the company had to pay $2 million for lost earnings, $1 million for pain and suffering, and $1 million for punishment.
Serious and catastrophic injuries like the ones the ship worker sustained can easily rack up expenses due to a variety of factors, including medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more. Serious accidents that lead to long-term and permanent disabilities also require lifelong care and treatment that can be costly.
