Top Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury

tbiAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between the years 2006-2010, falls were the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI), making up for 40% of all TBIs in the United states, with unintentional blunt trauma and motor vehicle crashes following in at 15% and 14%, respectively. Assaults made up about 10% of all TBIs.

For those aged 65 and older, the rates of TBI-related hospitalization and death are higher than most other age groups, and may even increase the chances of developing Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia in the future. However, children are among the most vulnerable individuals and extra care should be taken regarding their recovery. Since a child’s brain is not fully developed, damage to the brain, even if not immediately evident, could potentially have lasting effects and impact future brain development. Although falls were the most common cause of TBI for children as well as the elderly, assaults were the leading cause of TBI-related deaths for children 4 years old and younger.

Unlike both of these aforementioned age groups, motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of TBI-related deaths among those aged 24 and younger. Those between 15 and 44 also accounted for 75% of assaults that resulted in TBI.

The Pittman Firm, P.A. represents victims of brain injury and fight to secure financial compensation for their medical expenses, and the pain and suffering unnecessarily endured due to the negligence or carelessness of others. Although falls, motor vehicle crashes, and assault are some of the primary causes of TBI, medical malpractice may also cause it through, for example, a lack of oxygen, or undetected internal bleeding.
