Florida Auto Accident Fatality Stats

car crashMany people associate auto accidents with small fender-benders or passengers sustaining aches and pains. This is because they are common occurrences. However, what people don’t realize is how many accidents lead to fatalities throughout Florida.

According to statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety / Highway Loss Data Institute, in the year 2014, Florida experienced 2,336 fatal accidents. As a result—including drivers, passengers, and other individuals—2,494 people died. This is 12.5 deaths per 100,000 population.

The number is a slight increase from 2013 when there were 2,228 fatal accidents resulting in 2,407 deaths.

The data also breaks down fatal accidents by the type. This list shows what kind of accidents occur, but not by cause:

  • 32% car accidents
  • 16% pickup or SUV accidents
  • 1% large truck accidents
  • 18% motorcycle accidents
  • 24% pedestrian accidents
  • 6% bicycle accidents

These types of incidents can be caused by drivers who are drunk, fatigued, distracted, or more. This is considered negligence and is an action warranting a claim against the liable party.

Results from 2015 are not in yet, but early reports halfway through the year determined that there was a national increase in the number of fatal accidents.

Unfortunately, auto accidents are preventable which makes situations like these more devastating. Losing a loved one is never easy, but when someone’s negligence is the reason for the death, it is a daunting experience. This is why it is advisable to hire a legal professional who understands the ins and outs of filing a wrongful death or personal injury claim.
